Plus, you have search engines that like to ignore robots.txt, which you can circumvent by allowing only your IP to access the site through .htaccess.

I notice for WordPress solutions it seems to be the common practice, and all the examples you compared have GUIs. At a WordPress meetup recently, I gave a demo of DDEV command-line based tool that makes local dev with Docker easy. I went after a guy demoing straight-up Docker, so that was handy! When you use DDEV, only takes 1 min to set up WordPress sites. https://www.drud.com/ddev-local/one-minute-wordpress/

Disclaimer: I work for DDEV but one of the things I do is interview users, and we have lots of users who switched from MAMP. Most don’t seem to have even mentioned the GUI v command line. But it just occurred to me, most of the people I spoke w use WordPress, and Drupal, and PHP frameworks like Symfony.

My colleague just published a side-by-side comparison of MAMP v DDEV here if that helps:
https://www.drud.com/ddev-local/ddev-an-alternative-to-mamp-for-a-php-dev-environment/

You didn’t mention the fact that all these have GUIs, so I’m curious if you think that is major issue for you and most WP developers?

Their documentation is terse and leads to incorrect conclusions and a lot of running around in circles.

Thanks for the great write-up! Before I get into my response, I have to state for full disclosure that I’m one of the Partners with ServerPress, LLC (makers of DesktopServer), so I *might* be a little biased. I also like to respond to any reviews I find online for no better purpose than to let everyone know that we’re always interested in hearing what people say and want to be available to answer any questions people have.
While I realize that this review was written strictly from the software side, I think that one of the oversights with this, though, is the fact that our company is really more about the service than it is the software. The software is definitely solid, as you mentioned, and we’re about to push out a couple of really nice updates, but our mission is to always be there for our customers when they need it. DesktopServer is a great workflow tool for all of the above reasons, but as a company that specializes in workflow solutions, we know that sometimes things happen that can put a wrench in the works. This is our business and, as far as I know, we’re the only ones who specialize in local development service and support. We like to think of ourselves as the team member that can always be called on when something doesn’t work as it should.
Anyway, I just wanted to pop in, let you know that your article is highly appreciated, and to make ourselves available if there are any questions.
Thanks!
-Marc
